Helms in Diablo 2 is an armor piece that grants defensive properties and changes the appearance of the player. Helms consists of helms and Mask that protects the head of the character, these can be crafted and upgraded as long as the player has the Materials it needs.
Helms use the head slot located on the players inventory when equipped. Depending on their rarity, Helms can have random or unique modifiers that greatly increase the player capabilities.
Rarities
Armor can drop in different rarities, each providing more or less random modifiers: The names of Magic, Rare, Crafted/Very Rare, Set, and Unique Items appear in Blue, Yellow, Orange, Green, and Gold text, respectively.
Magic Items: Magic Items have 1 or 2 magical attributes applied to the basic item.
Rare Items: Rare items contain 2 to 6 magic properties attached to them.
Crafted Items: Similar to Rare Items, but can only crafted using the Horadric Cube. These items possess fixed properties as well as random Magic Prefixes and Suffixes.
Set Items: Set Items bestow additional magic abilities to the user once some or all of itts pieces have been equipped.
Unique Items: Unique items have unique names and attributes, and are the rarest among all item classes.
Durability
Weapons and Armor show a numeric Durability rating in their description. The first number indicates the current durability of the item, while the second one represents the item Max durability. When an item’s durability is low, you will see a silhouette in the upper right corner of the screen indicating the state of the damaged item. Items with low durability will be displayed in yellow. On the other hand, items that have reached 0 durability, will be displayed in red.
Once an item reaches 0 durability, it can not be equipped nor used until repaired. In order to repair an item, you have to head to town and pay the local blacksmith.
Low Quality, Cracked, Crude and Damaged Items
All these types of items have a lower Maximum durability, inflict less damage in the case of Weapons or grant less defense if we are talking about Armor, than their normal counterparts.
Superior Items
These items have improved Defense, Durability, Attack Rating or Enhanced Damage.
